2. Is WaterGym® effective for weight loss?

Yes! It's common knowledge that to lose weight you need to burn more calories per day than you consume. WaterGym® focuses on the calorie burning aspect of weight loss by increasing your activity level through aerobic exercise, and increasing your lean muscle through strength training.

The word "aerobic" means "with oxygen" and the amount of oxygen you inhale during WaterGym®'s aerobic section directly relates to the amount of calories you will burn. For every liter of oxygen you inhale, you burn approximately 5 calories. Every time you work a muscle, it demands more oxygen. Therefore, the more muscles you work the greater the demand for oxygen and the more calories you will burn. WaterGym® workouts are designed to work multiple muscle groups of the upper and lower half body at the same time, which can result in greater cardiovascular output, oxygen consumption and calories burned. The bigger and faster you move, the more calories you will burn.

Thousands of men and women of all ages and abilities have participated in WaterGym®, many reporting WaterGym® helped them get in shape faster and easier than any other exercise program they've tried!
3. How is WaterGym® different than swimming?

WaterGym® and swimming are two entirely different workouts that have certain goals that are almost exactly opposite to one another. Swimmers specialize in "drag minimizing" techniques, whereas WaterGym® participants specialize in
"drag maximizing" techniques.

SWIMMING = MINIMIZE DRAG
Swimmers are HORIZONTAL and learn techniques to MINIMIZE DRAG FORCES on their bodies so they streamline through the water creating the least amount of resistance in order to get from point A to point B as quickly as possible. Swimming has a multitude of benefits, provides an excellent cardiovascular and calorie burning workout and primarily works the muscles of your upper body, unless leg strengthening drills are performed using a kick-board.

WATERGYM® = MAXIMIZE DRAG
Whereas WaterGym participants are VERTICLE and learn techniques to MAXIMIZE DRAG FORCES on their bodies, particularly on the surface areas of their limbs, to tone and build lean muscle. WaterGym, similar to swimming, is an excellent cardiovascular workout, but working the limbs against the resistance of the water tones and strengthens virtually all of the major muscle groups of the body. And it is especially effective for toning and strengthening the muscles of the lower half the body; the buttocks and thighs.

4. How deep should my pool be to do WaterGym®?
Your pool depth only needs to be deep enough that if youre wearing a WaterGym Belt
and you extend your legs straight down, your feet wouldnt touch the bottom. This is usually around shoulder depth for most people because the belt lifts you up. Here's a good test...
|
1) Stand in your pool at the deepest part of the pool.

2) Hold two kickboards or any other type of flotation under your arms.
Do they lift you enough to where your feet wouldn't touch the ground?
If so, you should be able to do WaterGym!

3) If your pool is more shallow than described above, you can still perform most exercises by altering them slightly. For instance, if we ask you straighten your legs and point your toes, you can bend your knees slightly and flex your feet instead. This will prevent your toes from hitting bottom. (see photo below) However, if your pool depth is waist high, it is too shallow for WaterGym. We'll be making some shallow-water workouts in the future, so no worries!

 |
5. Do I get my hair wet?
No! Your head is kept dry and out of the water, so you don't have to wash or re-style your hair or redo your make-up. Many of our customers and clients do WaterGym early in the morning and go straight to work afterwards. Of course once in awhile we have so much fun we get a little splashy!
6. I DREAD shopping for a bathing suit. Do I have to wear one?
No! If you haven't purchased a new bathing suit for awhile, and dread the thought of going out bathing suit shopping (we've all been there!), you will be glad to know that there are simple alternatives that you can usually wear into your local pool such a lightweight shorts and t-shirt. It's advised to test the fabric of your alternate swim clothes before wearing them into the pool. Get them wet, and if the fabric bleeds color, choose something else.

7. Can I use the WaterGym® system without a belt?
WaterGym is performed in deep water, so we dont recommend participating without a belt unless youre a strong swimmer and completely safe and comfortable in deep water. However, many customers get greater fitness results using the belt. Heres why
|

WITH THE BELT
In WaterGym, you learn special techniques on how to work the water surrounding your body like a powerful gym. Every move you make is an opportunity to burn calories, build lean muscle and increase flexibility. The more specific your moves, the more you strengthen specific muscle groups and the greater your results.
Our WaterGym Belt holds you up, stabilizes your torso, helps you maintain proper alignment, and allows you to focus 100% of energy on powerfully working your arms and legs against the resistance of the water.

WITHOUT THE BELT
Without the belt, your moves can become less specific and more focused on treading water to stay afloat. In addition, its extremely difficult to remain vertical without sinking, so you might tend to lean forward and compensate proper alignment and execution of your exercises. However there are exceptions! They are folks whove been highly trained in deep-water (ex: synchronized swimmers), or folks whove taken WaterGym for years are able to maintain proper alignment and perform the powerful execution of their moves without a belt. They are the exception, so we highly advise all beginners to workout with the belt. |
8. I am a non-swimmer. Can I still do WaterGym®?
WaterGym is performed in deep water, so we dont recommend non-swimmers to participate in WaterGym because our WaterGym Belt is NOT a lifesaving device, nor is it approved by the United States Coast Guard as a life saving device. The WaterGym Belt is intended to be used by qualified swimmers for exercise purposes only, and should not be used by children or anyone who cannot swim unless properly supervised at all times. This is because the design of the WaterGym Belt will not prevent drowning because the buoyancy factor and its distribution in the belt is not sufficient to float a conscious or unconscious person in a "face out of the water" position.
However, many non-swimmers have participated in our WaterGym classes for many years (we take special care and supervise them very carefully), and many of them grew to love the water so much that they've learned to swim!
