THE STORY BEHIND THE WATERGYM FLOTATION BELT...

Prior to creating WaterGym, I was a dancer and choreographer. I trained daily, and even though I loved to dance, I found I could hardly wait to leave the hot, stuffy dance studio to plunge into a cool, refreshing pool to swim my mile. However, day after day, the same swim strokes became monotonous compared to the inspiring vocabulary of dance. Finally it dawned on me. Since I loved being in water, and I loved dancing, biking, running and all types of sports, why not combine elements of all of these great sports into one?

That's how WaterGym began. Over the last 20 years, with the help of my trained teachers, we've been setting up WaterGym water aerobic programs in Northern California, and refining a vast library of sports-oriented exercises and variations primarily performed in deep water using a flotation belt.

Coming from a "do it yourself" family of designers, it became my personal challenge to create the optimum deep-water flotation belt for the diverse shapes, weights and skill levels of our growing clientele.

So for over a year, with the devoted help of my beloved WaterGym students (and Nan and Jim's electric turkey carving knife), I cut up mounds of foam, making prototypes of every style belt imaginable, asking all of my client's to try them on. Pretty soon they started running the other way when they saw me coming through the door. "Oh no, not more belts to try! How long is this going to take?" But I wasn’t going to stop until I found a design that felt great to everyone. In the end our efforts we rewarded.
